Senetari is a human bard from Stellingham with an allergy to magic and a gift to make weird things happen. She meets a dwarf named Froma, who builds ships and together they go to Montescenia in search of a job for the storyteller. But the man hiring, Duke Montesceno, has been abducted by pirates and is being held for ransom, forcing Senetari to plan a daring rescue attempt to stop the sea-going brigands and their wizard leader.
Along the way Senetari befriends Tambelin, an elf, Kelikar, a fire mage, Steinar, a giant, a ship of pirates, and attracts a large number of followers. All this gets the attention of religious leaders. Suddenly she must navigate a maze of ecclesiastical edicts without getting anyone killed.
