Aure, the Topaz: Book 1 in the Aglaril Cycle

Background

Book cover of Aure the Topaz

Set in the kingdom of Thalacia, Aure the Topaz is the first chapter in the story of how the fabled elven gems of power began to be found and used after being presumed lost for so long. The gems, called the Aglaril, were once part of a magic elven crown. The crown was destroyed in an epic battle against evil and the gems scattered. Over time some were found. One, a topaz, for example, was discovered by the town jeweler of Clearbrook. He placed the gem on display during a festival celebrating a time when humans and elves collaborated more fully in the hopes of reminding everyone of the great past both races once shared.

But the novel is also the story of how seven people become tied to the first gem found and end up locating the rest while protecting them against the evil forces that would use their power despite the dire consequences of doing so. These are universal characters that exist today: the adolescent who is growing up; the alcoholic wizard who is recovering and trying to lead a better life; the elven daughter who must choose between her love for a human and obeying her mother against them; the son who pursues a profession which his father disapproves.

Come immerse yourself the rich fantasy realm of Thalacia. Experience the awe and wonder of the races that inhabit it and beware of the evil that lurks nearby. Necromancers, witches, centaurs, gryphons, giants, and a host of other creatures abound. Come experience the adventure. Read Aure the Topaz today.

Synopsis

Evan Pierce, a priest of St. Michael, is sent to the ruins of Mirea to stop a group of necromancers. Their leader, Jormundan, is planning some evil ritual there and is also wanted for questioning in connection to the planned theft of some priceless jewelry.

What Evan learns after defeating the necromancers and Jormundan escapes, is that the theft will happen in the town of C. Suspecting that this may refer to the town of Clearbrook, his old hometown, Evan preceeds there alone to rest and discovers one of the fabled elven gems has been found. It belongs to the town jeweler, Tindolen and it on display.

Concerned that the jewel may be the item Jormundan plans to steal, Evan tries to have it better protected but fails. So he stands guard himself; however, even this proves insufficent. The thief puts Evan and the other guards to sleep.

When Evan wakes and learns that the gem has been stolen, he pursues the thief and tracks the gem to Jormundan's workshop, which is full of ongoing experiments. Carefully, Evan searches the work room and finds the gem but before he can leave, Jormundan returns.

They fight but Evan is no match for Jormundan. Read the sample excerpt.

How can Evan win? And if he dies what will happen, what evil plans do the necromancers have for this magic gem? Purchase Aure the Topaz and find out.

A delightful tale with plenty of action and drama and a cast of characters you’ll both care about and worry over. This is fine, crisp and colorful prose. Overall, the book is well detailed but not overbearing with information. Instead, the story is driven ever forward through the suspenseful world of magic and human endeavor. A fine read!

As I read Aure, the Topaz I couldn\'t help but be reminded of my teenage dungeons crawls playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. Intriguing adventure story. Some of the characters are stronger than others. I can see them coming into their own in future books. The setting is familiar with its own unique history. It is a great story for bringing back nostalgic feelings of playing role-playing games late into the night; revisiting characters as if they were old friends, remembering ... Read More

This is not spectacular writing, but the story is and I feel compelled to continue the saga. It will be interesting to see him grow as an author.

Synopsis: Twenty-five years ago, invaders captured Andropolis, the capital of Thalacia, and ended the rules of King Leonard. According to prophecy, the invaders can be ousted and the royal line restored only by wielding the Aglaril, seven elven gems of unprecedented power. However, the circlet in which the gems were set was destroyed millennia ago and the gems lost. At least, that was the common belief. Evan Pierce, a priest of St. Michael, discovered one of the gems belongs to the town ... Read More

What pulled me in was the cover so when I requested a copy to review I wasn’t sure what I’d get but it was a very thrilling read. The world of fantasy is NOT dead!
